THEBRITISHINSPAIN.COM your online relocation guide

There are over 50 million visitors each year to Spain, but most of them leave after a few days. If you plan to stay in Spain — for whatever reason — you should save and read these pages carefully. I try to keep this page up to date but changes in the regulations or the way they are applied often go unnoticed. Always check with the nearest Spanish consulate before you make plans.

NIE: Foreigners fiscal ID number

The first step is to visit the appropriate National police station and apply for an N.I.E. number. This is an identification number for foreigners and is primarily for tax purposes. You will need to take along your passport and complete a simple form.   You may have been told that you can get a Gestor or Solicitor  to apply for your  number, this was true in the past but from 5th November 2003, all applications for NIE numbers have to be presented in person by each individual applicant. You will need the following to accompany your completed application: [In the download section we have the form and a copy with English translation]

For EU Citizens, the documents you need to present are:-
• Your current passport PLUS 1 photocopy of your passport
• 1 passport size photograph
• Completed application form PLUS 1 photocopy.

Take the completed form, to one of the following locations:

The Policia Nacional [national police office] at Calle Abeto 1. Elche, if you reside within the municipal boundary of Torrevieja or Rojales. [opening hours 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m.]
The Policia Nacional Office within the satellite Town Hall at
Playa Flamenca, if you reside in the Orihuela Costa area. [opening hours 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m.]
Applications can also be made direct to the main office, Calle Ebanisteria, 4 El Babel
Alicante. which is the Oficina de Extranjeros. [opening hours 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m.]

The Alicante office will process your application and may give you your NIE number on the spot. [If you apply at a local Police Station you may have to wait several weeks for the application to be processed.]
